Master The Silk Press: 5 Mistakes That Are Ruining Your Results
Let’s be real—every stylist has had a silk press day that didn’t go as planned. The bounce wasn’t
bouncing, or the shine just didn’t pop.
Most of the time? It’s not the tools—it’s the technique. Let’s fix that.
Mistake #1: Skipping the Clarifying Step
A silk press is only as clean as the base. Buildup and oils block the shine and cause early reversion.
💡 Use a clarifying shampoo first, then follow up with a moisture-replenishing treatment. Think: clean
+ hydrated = perfect press.
Mistake #2: Not Stretching the Hair Before Blowing Out
Letting natural curls shrink up before blow-drying means extra heat is needed later. Try sectioning and
stretching the hair as it air dries under a hooded dryer or use a paddle brush technique while damp.
Mistake #3: Using the Wrong Flat Iron
If your iron doesn’t have consistent heat and tension control, you’re fighting a losing battle. Invest in a
ceramic or titanium flat iron with temp settings and float plates.
Mistake #4: Not Controlling the Room
Humidity is the enemy. Make sure your workspace is dry and cool—especially in Atlanta summers!
Mistake #5: No Silk Wrap After the Press
If your client walks out with unwrapped hair? Game over. Wrap that press and give your client post-
care instructions for wrapping nightly.
